UK PACKAGING AWARDS: A NIGHT OF GLITZ & INSIGHT

From industry innovations to memorable conversations, my first UK Packaging Awards was a night to remember. It wasn’t just about applauding award-winning designs but also connecting with clients and media, gaining insights, and appreciating the true art of packaging. And yes, I made sure to look dapper while doing it!

A few weeks ago, I had the chance to attend the UK Packaging Awards by Packaging News for the very first time. As someone who still is learning more about the packaging industry, I didn’t fully grasp just how much goes into the science of packaging – and, admittedly, how much it’s overlooked. You think you know packaging, right? I mean, how complicated can a box or a bottle be? Well, I learned pretty quickly that it’s way more complex than that.

First, let me just say, I made sure to look sharp because, well, when you’re connecting with industry pros and creatives, you’ve got to bring your A-game. I won’t lie – I was more than a little proud of my outfit choice. Dapper? Absolutely. But enough about my attire, let’s talk about what really surprised me: the sheer scale of innovation in the room. The evening wasn’t just about celebrating beautiful designs but also about applauding the brainpower behind making packaging functional, sustainable, and downright clever.

There were multiple winners across a whole range of categories – each representing a different facet of the packaging world. A huge congratulations to all the winners on the evening. Whether it was award-winning sustainable designs, high-end luxury packaging, or just sheer creative brilliance, it seemed like every type of packaging got its moment to shine. But one thing that caught my attention was how many awards were related to packaging for alcohol-based products. It turns out people aren’t just picky about their drinks – they’re just as particular about how they’re packaged. While I do not drink alcohol, it was pretty cool to see Capri Sun take home an award that evening – a drink I tend to enjoy with the same enthusiasm as some do with alcohol!

Now, here’s where things get really interesting. Beyond the awards themselves, what truly made the night was the people. There I was, standing in a room full of professionals from all corners of the packaging world, from newcomers brimming with fresh ideas to veterans with decades of experience. The conversations flowed from discussions about the latest sustainability initiatives and industry trends to some light-hearted banter about how embarrassing it was that England were losing their football match to Greece that evening. It was also fantastic to have the opportunity to connect face-to-face with some of our valued clients in attendance, as well as key media contacts from Packaging News. Being able to discuss industry insights and celebrate together in person added a special touch to an already memorable night.

A personal highlight for me? Simply soaking it all in – the atmosphere, the industry experts, and the excitement of the awards themselves. The whole experience was something I thoroughly enjoyed, made even better by having some of my colleagues there to share the night with. It really made the evening special.

All in all, it was a night to remember – full of insight, inspiration, and some truly exciting innovations in the world of packaging. I walked away with a new appreciation for the industry, some great conversations under my belt, and a firm belief that packaging isn’t just about what’s outside – it’s about what’s inside, too (metaphor intended). Plus, I got to look dapper while doing it, so I’d call that a win in itself.

I’m already looking forward to attending more awards and seeing how the packaging world continues to evolve. Who knows what new innovations and ideas we’ll be celebrating in 2025? One thing’s for sure – I’ll be ready, suit and all.
