It’s always a pleasure to attend The Print Show, the flagship printing event within the UK. Amanda and I attended this year on 17th September. The event highlighted how far the print world has come even within the last year alone, as well as forecasting where it’s headed.

As we walked through the halls of NEC Birmingham, it became clear that print is not only surviving in this digital age but thriving. From bespoke marketing campaigns to efficient, eco-friendly production methods, print remains an essential player in today’s business landscape. Here, I share our findings from this year’s show.

AI and Automation

One of the most prominent themes this year was the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) and automation into nearly every aspect of the print process. From streamlining workflows to real-time predictive analytics, exhibitors emphasised how AI is reshaping production efficiency. From machines learning to optimise print runs or reducing waste through intelligent adjustments, AI’s impact was evident.

We found it fascinating to see how automation can now handle complex printing tasks with minimal human input, delivering consistency and speed. It’s exciting to think about the implications for all kinds of businesses.

Sustainability

Sustainability has undeniably been a hot topic for years, but the messaging at The Print Show 2024 took on a more nuanced approach. Instead of pushing bold, standalone sustainability messaging, as seen at previous shows such as drupa, exhibitors showcased how sustainable practices are being integrated into broader innovations. Rather than viewing sustainability as a goal in isolation, it’s now seen as complementary to wider goals and technological advancements.

Machines that reduce waste, consume less energy, and employ more eco-friendly materials were prominently featured, but the narrative focused more on how efficiency and sustainability work hand-in-hand. For instance, AI-driven systems also played a role in sustainable printing by optimising paper usage and reducing excess production.

This shift is not only more honest but also reflects the industry’s understanding that real progress lies in balancing innovation with environmental responsibility, rather than treating them as separate objectives.

Digital and Personalisation

Another major highlight was digital printing and personalised print. Exhibitors showcased an impressive range of high-quality, customisable print solutions, from large-scale posters to intricate, tailored marketing materials.

With the growing demand for personalised experiences across industries, print marketing is undergoing a revolution. Companies are increasingly leveraging data-driven printing solutions to create unique products that cater directly to consumer preferences. This ability to couple mass production with individual customisation is pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in print and creating exciting new opportunities for businesses.

Collaboration

One of the most refreshing aspects of The Print Show 2024 was the emphasis on partnership and collaboration. Exhibitors weren’t just promoting their individual products; they were actively demonstrating how brands and vendors are joining forces to offer more integrated, end-to-end solutions.

From the moment we stepped onto the show floor, there was a palpable sense of cooperation. Rather than isolated booths, many companies partnered to showcase complete print production lines, with one vendor’s technology complementing another’s software or hardware.

Overall, the intersection of AI, automation, and digital printing is shaping the future, while sustainability is now seamlessly integrated as a key part of innovation. More than just a collection of booths, the event highlighted how the print world is evolving by embracing new technologies and working collaboratively to meet the demands of modern businesses. The show has left us  excited for what’s next in this ever-evolving industry.
